A Journal Quilt wish: Peace in 2011

Missing spoke belatedly added
If you have visited my Journal Quilt site at my webpage, then you know the following: These quilt journals are sketches. They relate to a memorable event in a week. Whereas thinking of the ideas may take awhile, the crafting or stitchery should consume about 2 hours so that one will continue!
Peace Wish 2011

This is not a steering wheel but my quickly rendered peace sign, always wishing for peace on earth, good will to all men at the beginning of the new year. Yesterday, we watched a sobering award winning movie Jean loaned me called Why We Fight. I have also Googled "peace quotations" which I recommend.  Peace has not been achieved. Therefore this journal quilt is a break with tradition. It is a WISH for such a memorable event.

It was pleasant to sit at the piano to play some Christmas carols, today, before all is put away. I am always moved to play an adaptation of Longfellow's words:

I heard the bells on Christmas day,
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

And thought how, as now this day had come
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rung so long the unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.....

And in despair I bowed my head:
“There is no peace on earth,” I said,
“For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.”
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
“God is not dead, nor does He sleep;
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on earth, good will to men.”

  1. Lovely quilt, timely and the sentiments are something we all need to keep at the forefront of our minds. I love that carol by Longfellow! Sometime I'll tell you about the 2001 wall hanging I made for Kathy after 9/11 with the word peace inked on it in many different languages. Sadly, she doesn't display this quilt anymore. I am tempted to ask for it back!

  2. Haste makes waste! I forgot a spoke in the peace symbol. Will rectify mañana.

  3. Lovely New Year's beginning. Your journal quilts are always appropos, and I love the way the peace symbol is white and stands out. I raise my glass to peace on earth and hope that all mankind will want the same.

  5. The "complete" peace symbol is beautiful, and the background is perfect. Thanks, too, for the words to "I Heard the Bell on Christmas Day." It is beautiful and so appropriate for way too many times in our lives. May the sentiment expressed come true SOON.
