Thirteen is the family lucky number. Downsizing is a challenge but the sons are happy to see us off to Brookhaven@Lexington. We are hustling like young marrieds planning a first home. But what will I do with all my big paintings that I could never part with. I await your solutions! Especially the last floor to ceiling one!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">One of the exciting finds in sorting papers, was written by whom I do not know. I scribbled it in longhand and then typed it for legibilty. I thought it so articulate and nice as a review and hoped someone could identify the writer:</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><p class="p1" style="font-family: Optima; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size: 15px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; text-align: start;">“ Having just written on Post-Modern art, it’s gratifying to be hit with a web page so emphatically displaying it. Linda is very much AWARE of past art and artists but is never bound by them. She celebrates them wo worshiping them either in terms of style or content. In fact, it would appear that in many cases, she, herself, IS the content. Her work has the added appeal that it is sharp wo ever being harsh. It is strong, wo being exploitive, and it is striking wo doting on past definitions of beauty. And her sense of humor is rich wo being cute or even funny. One might call it an acute sense of the absurd. I guess I’d have to say it is okay. No, seriously, I was quite impressed.” [lindahicksweb.com]</p></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg_hp0TRIlsNsRIbmnoGT1m1d9B0YYY5wUKS4fDJMCIDJakpDdNfka3VzptQhUklUxDRRmdguY8OMCPKNkhyVF9_-jsbq9eFryri_2szKLkUlucDiECizOlbIWGKqQyP2OOhFzFGt355ynTHGKfBRIEWYfvOqUVZA4hoWnbMB16f-eUPFN_Opsx9u-xgvk" style="margin-left: 1em; Sometimes the dogs more than the owners. You watch the children grow up. People gather around when your house burns to offer keys to their homes. You get together for holidays and weekend celebrations. How does it get any better? </p><p> Surprises happen. Yesterday a new 6-year-old neighbor who earlier had asked Joe about Harry the dog: "from Harry Potter? Harry the Dirty Dog? " was sketching Harry in her sketchbook. Joe asked if she would like to walk the dog to our house to see Linda's paintings. Her 10-year-old brother and mother followed. Joe roused me to meet them. After observing my Medusa self portrait, the 10-year-old boy discussed his interest in Greek and Roman mythology. The young lady was proud her brother could take 84 to the 4th power in his head. The six-year-old looking at a painting where I had included Cezanne, thought he looked more like Claude."Claude who?"we asked. "Claude Monet!" she replied. We were staggered. There was talk of Kandinsky and other artists from these youth's conversation. Full names of artists. Then they volunteered to play the piano, some long, complicated classical pieces from memory. No shyness or braggadocio, but a sharing of gifts. Then the young lady wanted to see my sketchbook. She looked at almost 80 pages, one after another, not skipping any and mentioned her favorites. The rest of the time she was sketching. I saw her from afar, today, sketchbook still in hand. I like how she focused on Harry's hair, whiskers and tail. The brother was engaging also, noting details in books, talking more about artists. The two children were planning a secret dessert for the family dinner.</p><p> What blessings to their family and to our neighborhood. I love surprises and gifts. Walking is good.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjJ9PEKjRlFBs22-WWBV9hUcgeXBhRDrlBKObYddqhczRIUfkOnl7bRGa5zLQQX7EN8vHoJqG_muqkrqtCKMFc6zHL2P6z_vfWoQzsI9JtPC_pldZ13wcF_r5q2txwkRnA4fAJ9w5g8xHc35tGnXH9urclVQdmpMV95x8xWRLcKwz4T2md8M2lSd1TA" style="margin-left: 1em; Of course one expects sandwiches for a picnic. I preferred my tea at the Hyde Park Hotel where Joe and I stayed to look for a home for our three-year sojourn in England. The restaurant looks out on Hyde Park where troops on horses pass by. The hotel now has a new name, Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park. The chocolates, scones and clotted cream were my interest in the 80s, but now I am fascinated by the little tea sandwiches. I never made them, but I always wanted to. I was gifted a tea service which I only look at. So when Katie said she would like to have a tea for our quilt group reunion, I naively said I would make the finger sandwiches. I had NO idea about the effort, but I would do it again. Joe, my sous chef, would decline. I also baked and took along little white buttermilk cookies.</p><p></p><p> There are many instructions for <i>English tea sandwiches </i>on the Internet, but I knew I needed to find very thin slices of bread. Pepperidge Farm and others supply, but some people make their own bread to slice or go to a bakery that cuts thin. There are instructions on how to keep the bread fresh since you are advised to put the sandwiches together at the last minute. Rules are made to be broken. I will write minimally the most important of what I remember:</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgwJf9frRmYUzkqThOcTkGPZzEG6a5SMnuTi34be1rlRAZW9VUZ1V9yqw722UD5Hx3NdKZkVWDVePo5Cp0vTNFkr4vmQWIljAAJchiDEyrvGqbcWSanIRpFdgPVgyVITuKC6DBrvKFRQCNIlnScqNqcJ_T0z7cIeRVQsGOZnh0q8I96jDoNLLG4Ipyf" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img alt="" data-original-height="989" data-original-width="795" height="359" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgwJf9frRmYUzkqThOcTkGPZzEG6a5SMnuTi34be1rlRAZW9VUZ1V9yqw722UD5Hx3NdKZkVWDVePo5Cp0vTNFkr4vmQWIljAAJchiDEyrvGqbcWSanIRpFdgPVgyVITuKC6DBrvKFRQCNIlnScqNqcJ_T0z7cIeRVQsGOZnh0q8I96jDoNLLG4Ipyf=w289-h359" width="289" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgpGPlxcBsthhLTOvx-ICRqIYWIbh0lR4PYwM0TI8KfCBOQM0K252esQO5oT-aiWmXoetjCKvUe7GFcx116WrM_E6dchiZTY67DxG_TKc4be8Zts3vTClEyBAx-Sbob2-xZFi0IydcNxfJH4obNXvehhnZriP-a6XUh87OTftjovmOHtWsPJivf5yYo" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="736" data-original-width="1068" height="254" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgpGPlxcBsthhLTOvx-ICRqIYWIbh0lR4PYwM0TI8KfCBOQM0K252esQO5oT-aiWmXoetjCKvUe7GFcx116WrM_E6dchiZTY67DxG_TKc4be8Zts3vTClEyBAx-Sbob2-xZFi0IydcNxfJH4obNXvehhnZriP-a6XUh87OTftjovmOHtWsPJivf5yYo=w368-h254" width="368" /></a></div><p></p><p> Buy dark and light bread, maybe pumpernickel and potato bread (or just white). Although tempted otherwise, make only two recipes, initially. Plan to spread the inside of the sandwiches with soft butter (not melted) mixed w fresh chopped chives or other herbs. Chives are a rarity I grow and they return regularly. Butter keeps the bread from getting soggy, but possibly the cream cheese concoctions in your different recipes do the same.</p><p> I found recipes for watercress egg salad, cucumber dill, and smoked salmon sandwiches online. You will want to wade through your Google finds for the most appealing. I used a lot of cream cheese and lemon zest, dill and mayo. You will need more cream cheese than you think. Plan to be generous. Only after the sandwiches are spread and closed do you saw or cut off the crusts of the breads. You can get three tea sandwiches out of each big sandwich. You will need to wipe your knife constantly, so prepare to be neat. For variety you can cut out circle sandwiches with a cookie cutter. The greatest planning goes into deciding on the best recipes.</p><p> I put my sandwiches together the day of, but we enjoyed the leftover sandwiches for three days thereafter. Of course we wrapped carefully, including a paper towel inside the wrapped sandwiches. Give it a try, while I will hope to have my first "tea party" sometime soon. "Tea is a hug in a cup" (Elite Daily). "Where there is tea, there is hope."</p><p><br /></p>Linda Hickshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10622069411237073813noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7829354056212202313.post-20448192920279482222023-03-31T17:42:00.002-07:002023-03-31T18:03:25.001-07:00DIY as a beginner in flower arranging: Flexibility<p><span style="font-size: medium;"> There is a comfortable Do-It-Yourself level for most adventures. Joe and I were in charge of flower arrangements for the altar at church this Sunday. Having grown up in the Dustbowl, I know not flowers. But in a painting, one often chooses two colors opposite in the color wheel; and I thought that would work with flower design. I knew to cut off dead ends from stems and whatever would be under the water line in a vase. We headed to Trader Joe's where I have watched people choose a variety of greens and the prettiest blossoms delivered each week. Only after choosing, buying and creating our arrangements did I think to<b> Google "flower arranging for beginners!"</b></span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh1A_OSFBBx_RJTxHg4cxB6A7Gs8rjW2-zy5Jm78-eOX8fyXPABSh68BHGYB6L0YB0lzAWQB_ziXdw2gXXQ1I3Lfb02Bp9RvT7G9K3ZxiThvDy8n67t25XyHMeTo-OTw_BP0h3YVl5T65IjeRyC-eFcr6icr3NVK_FjNHMfKSISMwqw3kJBpjyIeBze" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh1A_OSFBBx_RJTxHg4cxB6A7Gs8rjW2-zy5Jm78-eOX8fyXPABSh68BHGYB6L0YB0lzAWQB_ziXdw2gXXQ1I3Lfb02Bp9RvT7G9K3ZxiThvDy8n67t25XyHMeTo-OTw_BP0h3YVl5T65IjeRyC-eFcr6icr3NVK_FjNHMfKSISMwqw3kJBpjyIeBze" width="180" /></a></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><span style="font-size: medium;"> Joe and I chose a pair of the church's bronze vessels to flank the cross. But only now am I finding one is to create a base with greenery. People enjoy odd numbers in designing, but this can vary. Sources</span><span style="font-size: medium;"> suggest you think of balance, harmony, and emphasis. Google says to add to the base, focal flowers and filler flowers. </span><span style="font-size: medium;"><span> I didn't follow any order or design, but worked from the back forward. </span><span> Online you can even find numbers of particular flowers that should be in a particular size in arrangements. This year, I wanted to copy Carol's irises which were in season. The store presented the most intoxicating white roses. The bouquets would be up against a flat background. We naturally had to design to fit our limitations; for instance, the back side of the arrangement is not visible. Mostly, I loved the thistles the color purple of the irises and greenery suggested by strangers in the store. I had wanted tulips, but the roses were compelling. I stuck in old tulips back home. On Valentine's Day, for the first time, I PURCHASED rather than created cards for the grandchildren. I was inspired to do something because I ran across an elementary school "Special Delivery Love Truck" son Jim made that had heart shaped wheels carrying stuffed red lips (think Claes Oldenburg) with a tag to pull to show teeth. Caught up in the spirit, I stepped into one store to find cards and simple little gifts to wrap to drop off for the youngsters.Since poetry happens in February, I added rhymes for each grandchild. When delivering, I spied on a shelf a small round canvas in a Valentine box. I must have painted the lovebirds before or at the time Bill and Beth married in 2000. She is sweet to save.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhW5-c_dEuKGspniRz46V3_d4PXRqCx4oLu0s4BblirjweH_hG16gBuxUezjzGTW5nQ_pPjwAZJTTjj3FefQ2BjvYgw76lrT1W9w1MUUvM5FDtR2ZUfzr-ZOwpC0L1pwkICWxxSP9Bk0XohBEi_2heG8KApHwll457-Z6QZ6HU8IzLEHK67tuhCrZEi" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="356" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhW5-c_dEuKGspniRz46V3_d4PXRqCx4oLu0s4BblirjweH_hG16gBuxUezjzGTW5nQ_pPjwAZJTTjj3FefQ2BjvYgw76lrT1W9w1MUUvM5FDtR2ZUfzr-ZOwpC0L1pwkICWxxSP9Bk0XohBEi_2heG8KApHwll457-Z6QZ6HU8IzLEHK67tuhCrZEi=w267-h356" width="267" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p></p><p> Grand Erika was born on Valentine's day and likes historical fiction. I had just discovered Marie Benedict's books on interesting women that are a pleasure to read. My favorite Book Bub introduced me to Carnegie's Wife; and I had read her The Personal Librarian about J.P Morgan's helper. Joe and I piled four paperbacks by this author to wrap: The Other Einstein (Relativity), The Only Woman in the Room (Wifi), Her Hidden Genius (DNA), and Carnegie's Maid. Some of these are in the stack on my table I have attacked. I am enjoying reading again, however distracted coming out of the pandemic with always too much to do.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjnN-5tJEITrDpTrjMXstTuXUG2BSlpdIM7MqbxkwdImFgH1SUjj4vmzcZGBU9aLEhU7B5Nd0wD_J3JrdPBEhzMrIH2ilLBCbdYbwWY62N10CsUHGT1S_Zd5_jTIey0edyL2YrM0nU5_DgZx6bM2TxoORFfxfHm8_zoCIaS0tB_Bi38sWp8L3vHRRRC" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3023" data-original-width="3856" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjnN-5tJEITrDpTrjMXstTuXUG2BSlpdIM7MqbxkwdImFgH1SUjj4vmzcZGBU9aLEhU7B5Nd0wD_J3JrdPBEhzMrIH2ilLBCbdYbwWY62N10CsUHGT1S_Zd5_jTIey0edyL2YrM0nU5_DgZx6bM2TxoORFfxfHm8_zoCIaS0tB_Bi38sWp8L3vHRRRC" width="306" /></a></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><br /></div></div> Next I was tempted by a Great Courses ad with seriously reduced prices. At my art show back in the mid-nineties, when son Jim bought a painting (Vanity in Aspic) to encourage my getting into computers, I had zero interest. Thanks to him, I bought a Mac computer and Adobe Photoshop among many other software. I took off two years to teach myself to use a computer and worked through a thick book Adobe sent along with their software. I didn't learn everything. Just what I wanted to know. Through the years I found the easier and less expensive Photoshop Elements and Comic Life were enough, all I needed. Trouble is, they take time to learn. Plus, inspired by a friend, I also want to practice piano more and color! In fact, recent research shows we have more happiness giving than receiving: <a href="https://www.psychologicalscience.org/news/releases/the-joy-of-giving.html?aps_source=homepage&aps_medium=featuredtile&aps_campaign=internal">The Joy of Giving Lasts Longer Than the Joy of Getting – Association for Psychological Science – APS</a>. On a smaller scale, I like to personalize gifts by making them, even though I am sure others might prefer to receive something more professional, just as the children want money.</p><p> Although I have been to the easel and sketchbook, I haven't followed through big time in paint and pencil. But a couple of weeks ago, near Halloween, I wanted to take some wine to people who had us to a meal to check out a retirement village. Joe found a seasonal wine and I grabbed some Halloween fabric to make a wine bottle cover. I am a fanatic to use a carrier for wine when it is a hostess gift or otherwise. I found several different patterns online and created bags quickly There are all sorts of styles, so <b>Google wine bag tutorials </b>to find a style for your scraps. Don't expect to excite someone. Grab a pencil and block of note pads to start marking during your next Zoom meeting. It is possible that concentration, memory and</span><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 16px;"> </span><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 16px;">happiness will increase.</span></p>
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 18px;"> Smart people continue to insist they can’t draw. That must not be the case since if you put a crayon in any child’s hand they move it around to create shapes and images. </p>
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 18px;"><br /></p>
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"> Doodles are underestimated as art or a path to. A doodle is a drawing made by a person whose attention may be elsewhere. There are many conscious and laborious doodle also. But I am interested in the mindless moving the pencil around on paper that changes by mood. You may develop a style thinking differently every time you approach and dive into the paper. Different things are on your mind, so just add them or parts to the paper. Lately i start with circles and lines, triangles and square. I add darks and sometimes erase. I never know where I will go next. Then sometimes I mark up the other Zoomers. Who know where it will lead. Have fun. </p><p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"> Click to enlarge. I drew the first batch on 3-inch square note blocks and the 2nd batch of doodles were drawn on 4-inch note blocks. Tomorrow, I will enjoy a members' look at the Obama portraits which have arrived at the MFA BOSTON. Joe has done it before but this time we hired painters others on our block used. The painters came fast and covered the house, but left as other clients signed them up, leaving many "painter holidays" which happen in every paint job. So we have been taking care of those in July. I liked the colors of paint on the Baker's historic home in Chestnut Hill and was able to find at Benjamin Moore to lift the personality of our house. We had to choose a new door color as well. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEggBW_0pc1ZnBzxiXov9Gf2_l5vsFnnpKcOdgq5z9lq37_3r-eOSq0r0UDIfPkEs0KCpUvg-xlf8e9D3mZ1qkKgPXl5VA1znZXxvcP508G61NwqlhiArj7f0TeFNWbwW9LTX6NzpB9ZVdl9Vgr-wlH-oN-6lnMfT--_CWT0flxptr3z5Abo_Lkyn7J-" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2104" data-original-width="4031" height="235" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEggBW_0pc1ZnBzxiXov9Gf2_l5vsFnnpKcOdgq5z9lq37_3r-eOSq0r0UDIfPkEs0KCpUvg-xlf8e9D3mZ1qkKgPXl5VA1znZXxvcP508G61NwqlhiArj7f0TeFNWbwW9LTX6NzpB9ZVdl9Vgr-wlH-oN-6lnMfT--_CWT0flxptr3z5Abo_Lkyn7J-=w450-h235" width="450" /></a></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgjPnBiwfU_vd4JF1PcVy7BGQ527RPTE5gqA6MBsvpYmZa2vZmtl_O7JBtT4xWtgAgxgFD7wnXFkbcRh39b_KlxeF_cozF5OrKE4l49iHnTfg4vaXuRFhHk-A-_GmYQlROTkd3rEEsGnZ9rFsvML6HUjcZItCn_OS9jaD1v0UU59iFPQALba_PhRSNR" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3312" data-original-width="2969" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgjPnBiwfU_vd4JF1PcVy7BGQ527RPTE5gqA6MBsvpYmZa2vZmtl_O7JBtT4xWtgAgxgFD7wnXFkbcRh39b_KlxeF_cozF5OrKE4l49iHnTfg4vaXuRFhHk-A-_GmYQlROTkd3rEEsGnZ9rFsvML6HUjcZItCn_OS9jaD1v0UU59iFPQALba_PhRSNR" width="215" /></a></div></div><p></p><p> To go with the Benjamin Moore Aura Custom light yellow shingles and Gingersnap trim, we chose Newburyport blue and a dark chocolate accents for doors. The deck became Behr's Cordovan Brown and Atlantic Blue. The blue was opposite on the color wheel from yellow, so it seemed a "go." Heretofore window and roof trim has been light, enlarging the house visually. But our new trim darker than the shingles, calmed down the house, and I love it. Unfortunately some of the thick primer lost some shingle markings. Nothing is perfect. Not all was primed or covered including the lower backs of the front porch columns. Easy to forget with the covering bushes. Also, we wanted coordinated back basement windows and door trim to go with the rest of the house. We were pretty fast making decisions/choosing colors, but some thoughts and fixes come over time. We need touchup over the back porch door and bits elsewhere.</p><p> The real fun in painting was taking some left-over deck colors and painting tops of two old deck side tables. It was a joy greater than getting to the canvas. Same for trimming 1 1/2" the blue deck top and landing, where I used a tiny roller over a brush. Painting trim without thinking is so much fun, I just must learn that is the way to paint canvas.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEju-9gnYgZXoTVSuK56af3P614kmTMCJJF3-eMl2GtYnK9v07qdTxGfWnqOFkwCQzJPOSMs9WHZAt8f6_efvhq5DziU8SjtTE4kjue1c0HDqY2cm0HYllra_kAS4AEQbDr0XkD1b9W9E94FdbL6umaAyB1U8d5LFc1duQj3WgNYn6lwRuf7PslBrGxb" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEju-9gnYgZXoTVSuK56af3P614kmTMCJJF3-eMl2GtYnK9v07qdTxGfWnqOFkwCQzJPOSMs9WHZAt8f6_efvhq5DziU8SjtTE4kjue1c0HDqY2cm0HYllra_kAS4AEQbDr0XkD1b9W9E94FdbL6umaAyB1U8d5LFc1duQj3WgNYn6lwRuf7PslBrGxb" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">\\</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgbImYX4NyduZu1AjTWnD7Bepi9_K_P3FYdfikgWGYCirPGIB5iP1nKVj8AbsVZ3pmwQB4rJGKm6kGxllP2AWtvmzeulkjyf987pw8lfP-dacMt3VITUuS6P_Z7md4sH_MGLyD7A5RpLH6K4RpCbuxPkftYYbvMV5w7edarNV4a_m7cXLY50gL-aX4R" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgbImYX4NyduZu1AjTWnD7Bepi9_K_P3FYdfikgWGYCirPGIB5iP1nKVj8AbsVZ3pmwQB4rJGKm6kGxllP2AWtvmzeulkjyf987pw8lfP-dacMt3VITUuS6P_Z7md4sH_MGLyD7A5RpLH6K4RpCbuxPkftYYbvMV5w7edarNV4a_m7cXLY50gL-aX4R" width="320" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg-LAXNAXGdg92gILua6jctRRIgTIoP48GXozyiwu9ANiW817OvfhSkChHAiRU3Mxvq0uRTzX82ofUYs5yopKWKgu0J94neg2mSzUF-Z2h9jDnsjVtVX51-FCx3bUYAulatFXPKQnA_RKcMph0TQ5V9emVY_BlSxaGlAvfmk7mL6uvyfKOk887hZtCj" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg-LAXNAXGdg92gILua6jctRRIgTIoP48GXozyiwu9ANiW817OvfhSkChHAiRU3Mxvq0uRTzX82ofUYs5yopKWKgu0J94neg2mSzUF-Z2h9jDnsjVtVX51-FCx3bUYAulatFXPKQnA_RKcMph0TQ5V9emVY_BlSxaGlAvfmk7mL6uvyfKOk887hZtCj" width="180" /></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgyvxyliCEuFMm0bJ7NM8MlaM-QXp7sC04xif4P39plnz4JcQLh02bLmcoXgNvQtu0-nVVBo2F373GcL11tEaHNlKBoNjZPo9ES8BjlXi25Wn6NDgY66ku4qlVBxXZTOhae7BYSooqAr-zKQKYqrKFh0xWpTGvEyQWlE_STeYJAQNU8x3qhZ3kLLJ3N" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgyvxyliCEuFMm0bJ7NM8MlaM-QXp7sC04xif4P39plnz4JcQLh02bLmcoXgNvQtu0-nVVBo2F373GcL11tEaHNlKBoNjZPo9ES8BjlXi25Wn6NDgY66ku4qlVBxXZTOhae7BYSooqAr-zKQKYqrKFh0xWpTGvEyQWlE_STeYJAQNU8x3qhZ3kLLJ3N" width="320" /></a></div><br /><br /><p></p><p><br /></p><p> </p>Linda Hickshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10622069411237073813noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7829354056212202313.post-88941882200065862672022-07-08T15:47:00.005-07:002022-07-08T15:47:59.663-07:00Gifting a Quilt When I had my first baby, I was sent a wonderful quilt that I continued to enjoy with my grandchildren. Quilts carry on and pass down through the years the loving touches sewn to connect the maker with the recipient.<div><br /><div> I was not a quilter, but wanted to make my first grandchild Hannah a quilt for the same reason. You want to sew/sow a connection. I made a quilt from "whole cloth" the imagery reflecting me and my hopes for fun w the grandchild. I had a sewing machine for straight stitches and felt I could tie knots to connect the back through the padding to the front. I looked up on the computer how to make a border.</div><div><br /></div><div> Erika received the same quilt with a changed border and background. It was with horror I wondered, "Did I make David, the third, a quilt as well?" I couldn't imagine leaving him out. I found an old photo. His was made with two big pieces of polar fleece, the edges of which were cut and tied together. "Tie blankets" from fleece! So many color and theme choics in this cozy material. All instructions are online.</div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="margin-left: 1em; I mentioned my failure to Hannah. She said I could make one for her if I wanted to. With little time left, I imagined the color blue she likes, saw some clever patterns in stores and decided I would make a book quilt for Hannah who is a phenomenal reader.<div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh2k0rkdzYO2DbCKwyXOSOAnwIqLBMnGM_zCpIlhysL2lZ5-OLnIFWa3YVep9odFzXfHxiTGY-16RgNUq6c32TtWFCz-PvfrSCJYRgkJoJ9Lp31HQpqKLdmCm_NQvm_tqIzhnQjF_EDrCQIAbZpXgFh-nUePF_noulWlVhF0E4vBr21TNofojEtg92Y" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh2k0rkdzYO2DbCKwyXOSOAnwIqLBMnGM_zCpIlhysL2lZ5-OLnIFWa3YVep9odFzXfHxiTGY-16RgNUq6c32TtWFCz-PvfrSCJYRgkJoJ9Lp31HQpqKLdmCm_NQvm_tqIzhnQjF_EDrCQIAbZpXgFh-nUePF_noulWlVhF0E4vBr21TNofojEtg92Y=w240-h320" width="240" /></a></div></div><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh_dn0MAKoVlkuUllDg7ZhcXrBtgEPzV3oWeO3CELwGTKkwxmAwiVXGsWdMRja5dtGedOJHpkTrHQol0i_Xz2FtM3QhIqQ9m9TdwcMVZ0PN48__svAHFt95XZD6e5eDVYgdtAlAa1IeaBdxzJmLy2sAZ13OCpQae2-Tt9TV_pkhN6bxSiRtTr5Id6Vi" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">\</a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgk622zeeSXtgF4TNEPFU8ae3qSjzF56Cc5lghrK82G_FbobSlJiCJi-i5dPcflfJv9l-vMRtC4FXp8bspegJB4cGNW7po_n_60LsH6E2yWGIOIhbWgsOT0QDt4UZOdlUJkvP-8jhGg6k7uNrKihM5zLm0Or8FpHMgGYHuyVCJwuTWxXmlwNSa6CEms" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; display: inline;"><img alt="" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi161cmr2Rh9fplKEZk8YtyjUxbTrTjlrBaoK0XYl7VJDVdwAQgooNAT5XctFJlFFpavDHhnmgD8XkAeMGEaiY_Bt2_lEmk3sqTbYpRkMOl4Dhvs4P4u6zqTNKnOYOO6Bmi3nRaJdsYk_7BU4w-YaxoyctbULdmEXfyUJykB7j-dEJNvbx-9ywuUmHx" width="180" /></div></a></div></div><div><br /><div> I researched "book fabrics" online and found fabric with prints of pages of books and stacked books. Amazon mailed. Like the graduating student, I didn't know exactly where I was going but I moved with the adventure. Inspired by Katie, who was creating a 45" x 45"of life and ball game T-shirts for her grand, I decided to make a lap quilt size so the memories would fit on a dorm bed or chair to provide hugs from home and family. I would sew the fabric face to face and somehow look for gold cord for the edges. This I found at fabric discount store, Sewfisticated in Somerville which also had upholstery trim loaded with tassels that I cut to attach to suggest book marks. The trim and cord were so inexpensive, I bought more than needed. Maybe a pillow? Katie said she prefers lap quilts at 45" x 45" and she used cozy flannel instead of batting. Mine was to be 45"x 56". I got thin cotton batting Quilter's Dream that is good for hand quilting since my sewing machine was acting cranky.Joe designed the iPhone pocket and I sewed a label underneath saying "Made With Love." </div><div><br /></div><div> <img alt="" data-original-height="3356" data-original-width="2635" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh_dn0MAKoVlkuUllDg7ZhcXrBtgEPzV3oWeO3CELwGTKkwxmAwiVXGsWdMRja5dtGedOJHpkTrHQol0i_Xz2FtM3QhIqQ9m9TdwcMVZ0PN48__svAHFt95XZD6e5eDVYgdtAlAa1IeaBdxzJmLy2sAZ13OCpQae2-Tt9TV_pkhN6bxSiRtTr5Id6Vi" width="188" /></div><div><br /></div><div> There were many crises and mistakes figuring how to insert the ribbon of the cord between the fabrics. I watched videos and realized I needed a fancier zipper foot to ride the cord. Next time I might sew on a cord without the ribbon. I did lots of hand sewing and there is a thread made for that which slides more easily into the fabric and batting. I finished after about 7 intense days doing little else. I had blind quilted the batting to the books fabric and now had to tie surgeon knots to the three layers as invisible as possible.I grew to love the quilt and am missing it now.We are so fortunate to have the Internet and videos to fill in the gaps of what we need to know and how to solve crises. I am glad the quilt was a hit.</div><div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjcPkexOZKaO0UhM4j6WnqEg6rC4E1T5lHDyPGVmERcBOEWyha00D1fRXrjGhi0gRDL-vZUDgAuQfjdZoLC_9xIA6OuUCbNoo7l5vOIj5GBgNX-aaM0cCtwM61-Z1Gb83seQKXzUIIzNgaXbJh9J9H5MpOEAM4yIqspdM-9ga7iEL8L4sXMJENBkFBs" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3097" data-original-width="2290" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjcPkexOZKaO0UhM4j6WnqEg6rC4E1T5lHDyPGVmERcBOEWyha00D1fRXrjGhi0gRDL-vZUDgAuQfjdZoLC_9xIA6OuUCbNoo7l5vOIj5GBgNX-aaM0cCtwM61-Z1Gb83seQKXzUIIzNgaXbJh9J9H5MpOEAM4yIqspdM-9ga7iEL8L4sXMJENBkFBs" width="177" /></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">More "book quilts" found online. and there are others.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjnJpSR1szUzVzoj_XoZ4a6ahdhPIHn4vKfpf1ZogY11Uw57xPRm8UwJ5OQfWhnfTFJpD877tCDCSsRn2wm60JoptYV3494WTIJWfvJgRbgJ7LQr434gdDarEM5pTWOJphv1urw-oAyIlbtNt_l5nASWY1AbDPOBWLQCI0Y23om2FdSVpBhNwj95ImV" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2350" data-original-width="1708" height="375" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjnJpSR1szUzVzoj_XoZ4a6ahdhPIHn4vKfpf1ZogY11Uw57xPRm8UwJ5OQfWhnfTFJpD877tCDCSsRn2wm60JoptYV3494WTIJWfvJgRbgJ7LQr434gdDarEM5pTWOJphv1urw-oAyIlbtNt_l5nASWY1AbDPOBWLQCI0Y23om2FdSVpBhNwj95ImV=w272-h375" width="272" /></a></div><br /><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">\</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div></div></div>Linda Hickshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10622069411237073813noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7829354056212202313.post-38201539687159737512022-04-29T15:12:00.002-07:002022-04-29T16:48:54.950-07:00NYC art trip blends into Ukrainian egg play solutions In New York City it was good to see the <b>Holbein </b>paintings and drawings and return to the condo to make my own portraits .It was good to visit the New York <b>Historical </b>Society to see all their outreach to more diverse groups but also enjoy the paintings of the city and recent purchases to their collection. Our 3rd stop, the New Museum, was also extraordinary and where I got great inspiration: I thought I knew <b>Faith Ringgold</b>'s work but there was more. She has been painting her world on fabric all her life. <u>Painting what is going on in my world now is my charge, </u><div class="separator" style="clear: both; display: inline; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;">but I am not quite ready to show my new political drawings. The final day was a visit to the </span><b style="text-align: left;">Whitney,</b><span style="text-align: left;"> just before the Bicentennial, The Whitney like the MFA, Gardner, ICA and other museums are making efforts to include those who have not been so present in the art world in the past. Our experience is richer for that.</span></div><div><br /><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhpH8RGnaomZPwZbY2FmGwlLGn3fEISAnHskWU0_4SQFMgAUhzK3jrK_POXGjS1nw5ZFOrmQJ-e9gojbyenM6SF9FlNBu6d5QXsXkfIQPFklHnHhiyA3XdUdyz2XeqF0MQFeAHLchJ195iA7AIYAJBXxPnQ94F7NyglCvD00TUraEo2g7FuzW2sJijg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2818" data-original-width="2428" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhpH8RGnaomZPwZbY2FmGwlLGn3fEISAnHskWU0_4SQFMgAUhzK3jrK_POXGjS1nw5ZFOrmQJ-e9gojbyenM6SF9FlNBu6d5QXsXkfIQPFklHnHhiyA3XdUdyz2XeqF0MQFeAHLchJ195iA7AIYAJBXxPnQ94F7NyglCvD00TUraEo2g7FuzW2sJijg" width="207" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div> All of a sudden it was<b> bunny time</b> and what to bring new to the event. The awful war in Ukraine was on full force. I remembered that I once painted Ukrainian Pysanki Easter eggs. I probably didn't know where Ukraine was. I would use permanent markers to draw the symbols and patterns on eggs that had been blown or sucked out of shells I thought it a good time to think of and talk about Ukraine and the amazing leader, Zelensky.</div><div><br /></div><div> First I attended a Senior Center event to paint or batik the eggs as traditionally done. I had so much fun that Joe made me some tools that I might use to let the wax paint designs and the egg be dipped into color after color like batik and the wax finally melted off for a special glowing finish. You can Google how to paint Pysanki patterns, find story books and watch the process on YouTube. I needed tools. Joe took some paint brushes, removed the brush, drilled holes and glued cake decorating tips in the holes. If the super glue does not hold in the flames, we will need another solution like tiny wires to hold the nozzles in place. Wood pencils were inserted in handles for a cool hold.</div><div><br /></div><div> Two other finds were the squishy eggs to paint on. I gave the grandchildren Ukrainian pattern books but they have their own ideas. And the wildest find was the shrink wrap for Pysanki egg decoration. I ordered the shrink wrap designs online from Diximus through Amazon. You merely slip the designs on any eggs. I had wooden eggs. You boil water, turn off the fire and in slotted spoon dip the </div><div>egg into the hot water. In two to four seconds you have gorgeous eggs.Nothing wrong with easy.</div><div><br /><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjV0cHZ0GTB30NN9shKFc4KxHT_nRZOvFGj4dFcXbjPNFGouK93xpkBdexz-sn-sMw_YhJ5l2oB7UXbs-3HzkeMbFkX-CxA7-KhrvkfQgM4e3vGAfFlafNYT4b_7j9RYsUgT2B6jFEumIQJZLWWMkSMeYrt5rovxvLmXdNMTqIjUAKm66Q0kOhUGUC1" style="margin-left: 1em; Joe framed the paintings as fast as I produced. I continued to learn from free courses online.I took an humble seascape and repainted it using the composition rule of thirds, one of many seascape composition ideas you can Google to find at Pinterest. It made all the difference in a repaint.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiDXChbEIYFFs1YCKpUGxHzwPTM000G-In-6wwtzC3305N5-UuLT2U5PELspJYC0O46ocBxT0A1JuY3MpOxdaFwghTuaXA9kxilg4BPD15ZChO0koC3IjiQarzlJAT1izXD79R37okcxmmxSP6onJ4SMlJ-gBeyTlLuYUxtU8tL12McEHJMRKI4PapB" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="238" data-original-width="320" height="273" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiDXChbEIYFFs1YCKpUGxHzwPTM000G-In-6wwtzC3305N5-UuLT2U5PELspJYC0O46ocBxT0A1JuY3MpOxdaFwghTuaXA9kxilg4BPD15ZChO0koC3IjiQarzlJAT1izXD79R37okcxmmxSP6onJ4SMlJ-gBeyTlLuYUxtU8tL12McEHJMRKI4PapB=w368-h273" width="368" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /><span style="text-align: left;">A trip to NYC for museum shows further inspired. Three floors of Faith Ringgold's work at the New Museum in the Bowery impressed me how she integrated all in her life, constantly, in creating her art work. Often the free courses create a group on Facebook where you can show your work progress and make artist friends. Last month it was a stitching class. This month I checked into some painting courses. I believe in always learning and it is quite fun in a course. Nietzsche said, "The doer alone </span><span>learneth!" If you go for one free course, you will hear about others, on Facebook. 'Tis g</span><span>ood </span><span>to be shadowed by algorithms for productive reasons.</span></span></p><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgPcOmuAQQDGYg3FQioZjOi7D4pApuXBBrk2CAlQZaZvtj1G0g5kNU5q2GUbCWBd-AcHKuRie78h2l8QCvPIPCc7fcjNAFhj2SjNWkNlKigjLRl0M_4eZnqFYACvvz6O3OtpgC7Zts14I60RTSz9Nj-6REf2KAhTvOAmpO1XFkvk_CC7hKjhqnMKrcy=s640" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="338" data-original-width="640" height="261" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgPcOmuAQQDGYg3FQioZjOi7D4pApuXBBrk2CAlQZaZvtj1G0g5kNU5q2GUbCWBd-AcHKuRie78h2l8QCvPIPCc7fcjNAFhj2SjNWkNlKigjLRl0M_4eZnqFYACvvz6O3OtpgC7Zts14I60RTSz9Nj-6REf2KAhTvOAmpO1XFkvk_CC7hKjhqnMKrcy=w496-h261" width="496" /></a></span> </span><div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;"> The class that excited me most was one that taught me to think about painting in smaller blocks of time on smaller canvases. Too often, in the past, I would paint from 9 am until 9 pm. I painted lots of huge paintings. Recently I have worked small. After dinner, I may decide to go in to paint for half an hour. Of course I get caught up and can't quit. Mary Bentz Gilkerson taught many things, but what I got out of her pedagogy was not to concern yourself with critiques and try to make a painting in 20 minutes. I gathered that 90 days of an activity can turn into habit. Sure enough, I paint every day now. I finally have something to report in my blog: recent paintings above and two I am still working on below. There are several other courses I tried and loved, including abstract art. I recommend your checking them out and maybe bite off a bigger involvement in learning. "It does not matter how slowly you go, so long as you do not stop!" (Confuscius)</span><p></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"> I got<i> started </i>on the two paintings below, a few nights ago. I am like a beginner, learning all over. Thomas Jefferson said, "I'm a great believer in luck, ... I find the harder I work the more I have of it." I am finding the more mistakes I paint, the more I learn. It is such fun. These below are not finished.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"> Making my beginning efforts easy, I am using fast drying Holbein's Acryla Gouche. It is water based, and I used small nylon brushes. If I had it to do over, I would use a few basic colors to mix to make my colors, rather than try to buy a color for every nuance. Also, I have to move my painting posture to standing up and return to oils or acrylics, bigger brushes and more movement. Sitting so long is not wise. I anticipate painting the grandchildren on oval canvases before Easter since they are almost an egg shape.</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjVqlOv116q2YXBKpujSp6tVk18wSn-vHH6c-F3ghqBCUlpC4sQwgcPFFDEEMTtLo8sbb3UbN646P6lb5MjcYvZS5IzZRapvTnHfGHKmb_mhAltxFjWZ8deInKhTb0K_dEQBOeLceJbgjZltEFHszqmLS3UN8OI0bgnfUsgF6D0VVlKSDMQJNMzA-ZC=s640" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjVqlOv116q2YXBKpujSp6tVk18wSn-vHH6c-F3ghqBCUlpC4sQwgcPFFDEEMTtLo8sbb3UbN646P6lb5MjcYvZS5IzZRapvTnHfGHKmb_mhAltxFjWZ8deInKhTb0K_dEQBOeLceJbgjZltEFHszqmLS3UN8OI0bgnfUsgF6D0VVlKSDMQJNMzA-ZC=w300-h400" width="300" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh1mCYK7acu1kYHHtUNVzhs7F3QnbYAbDLH4kYFpTl8w-r9G00sm-d2lAcz-crW2PfWF1MYPg4aRpKwbzvJGswHeuHXbs0wQsWmRm4RE-yKIE9ZfHKYMu4_zTJxrZqteELeZyeDIe4k4354IGvyOPGg3KUTihtqH4CVC314KsTthIann9IPcDI3jdmT" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3115" data-original-width="2935" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh1mCYK7acu1kYHHtUNVzhs7F3QnbYAbDLH4kYFpTl8w-r9G00sm-d2lAcz-crW2PfWF1MYPg4aRpKwbzvJGswHeuHXbs0wQsWmRm4RE-yKIE9ZfHKYMu4_zTJxrZqteELeZyeDIe4k4354IGvyOPGg3KUTihtqH4CVC314KsTthIann9IPcDI3jdmT" width="226" /></a></div></div><br /><br /><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span><p></p></div>Linda Hickshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10622069411237073813noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7829354056212202313.post-34111073419408909392022-01-31T17:26:00.001-08:002022-02-03T09:12:12.506-08:00The Internet Connects to Inspire<p>Facebook remembers and connects us to old memories. I'll be there. <p></p><p>Deborah wrote that TextileArtist.org had a free five-day Stitch Camp. What fun. Day by day they gave us another step in this adventure with needle and thread, fabric and paint. The first day we made paint marks on two fabrics, then cut them up, sewed them together, embroidered, painted and appliquéd. Working with Gwen Hedley while seeing the class results, it was a happy no-pressure learning experience <a href="https://www.textileartist.org/gwen-hedley-stitching-distress-and-repair/">Gwen Hedley: Stitching distress and repair - TextileArtist.org</a>. Slow stitching is meditative. Most people stitched abstractions of many emotions, but we all LOVED our process. You might visit TextileArtist.org and get to know these wonderful artists. Joe rolled his eyes, but I won't forget this adventure. We are in Belmont, rather than New York City because of the raging Omicron virus. In the new year, there are blank coloring pages on which to draw our lives.</p><p>Inspired by Ellen Katz and Jay Werb with their beekeeping and honey, Joe is talking about keeping a hive. I wish he would. As for me, I need to organize my life more. I could change the direction of my blog. A plan is not needed. One can just make the jump or find a better way.</p><p>For a start I want to shine a spotlight on the creative Sally Baker. In secret she made a lap quilt for her husband who is from Kentucky horse country, finishing just in time for Christmas. She said I could share the <b>My Old KY Home</b> with anyone I wanted. That lap quilt is so lovable, no wonder she is not tired of it after all her labor!</p><p>My heart beat to see horseshoes revealed in the quilting. The longarm quilting was done by Creative Longarm Partners in Marlboro MA. They have lots of patterns to choose from, so Sally was thrilled to see they had a horseshoe. I love her color choices and the horse variations in the blocks. The reverse or back side is clever with the roses placed after the finish line! The third photo shows how she "fussy cut" the horses from fabric.</p><p>People in Boston have been elated by the big quilt show at the MFA and the surprising history it reveals, not just technique. I recommend a visit. Pamela Reynolds in the Boston Globe wrote: "while many of the quilts on display are the traditional idealized rustic 'Americana,' many others are analytical, critical and socially aware. These are not your grandmother's quilts." She paraphrased quilter Mazloomi's saying "quilts can be a soft place for hard conversations." I must return to the show. I'd like to make a lap quilt.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhRvhWMofayrsA6CBJZqV4WcKcRsK4_xwxIJ4O3meJGBdstTRkwaySgsQu-RUH1dqVmt-26f0vFiLc5w_kBBGEy3W4y5tcl1PmBqaDB8FfFveRRV2NjhCsbgq2jDk4KpERUZP0MKVBa87d-_KVDoisTFQ8ZPWIpgQjOC7twMzHGo4kfjUbqStvUT3aT=s1488" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1488" data-original-width="1396" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhRvhWMofayrsA6CBJZqV4WcKcRsK4_xwxIJ4O3meJGBdstTRkwaySgsQu-RUH1dqVmt-26f0vFiLc5w_kBBGEy3W4y5tcl1PmBqaDB8FfFveRRV2NjhCsbgq2jDk4KpERUZP0MKVBa87d-_KVDoisTFQ8ZPWIpgQjOC7twMzHGo4kfjUbqStvUT3aT=w600-h640" width="600" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiIKCroPt_Q5Uv67mh1Uoagk344F-wl8sBemJg9dMj1_oPo-wsQgFn_fufN4rHlBQ2TsvBwnuBzWLX11-zlSdp8PtJZCfPKR5qRBqRTA8cZZWHdlStcyqyAGqJ6YJsWcwAd1sjYuuwhEjt9VLnLCD5KizITQ0cC4PsK4XzD4QFsjs34cDwiD01tPrDH=s2016" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2016" data-original-width="1512" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiIKCroPt_Q5Uv67mh1Uoagk344F-wl8sBemJg9dMj1_oPo-wsQgFn_fufN4rHlBQ2TsvBwnuBzWLX11-zlSdp8PtJZCfPKR5qRBqRTA8cZZWHdlStcyqyAGqJ6YJsWcwAd1sjYuuwhEjt9VLnLCD5KizITQ0cC4PsK4XzD4QFsjs34cDwiD01tPrDH=w301-h320" width="301" /></a></div></div><br /><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjspaEc2auEu__gu9SURVjTt7MUgZX6o7atS5nCFV2dWsCQBVilrJk47YyAQrAjYm-xwCUTt2oo19uifJpgCsdbuOOz015qUc_0CDnuN_Frw7dlFKefBvlqSRPbqDyj9807c48rI44DJLC8BQvBKjePezZBuMjjJTEM20ldOskrjQyRb-MvkgCX3xMz=s4032" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjspaEc2auEu__gu9SURVjTt7MUgZX6o7atS5nCFV2dWsCQBVilrJk47YyAQrAjYm-xwCUTt2oo19uifJpgCsdbuOOz015qUc_0CDnuN_Frw7dlFKefBvlqSRPbqDyj9807c48rI44DJLC8BQvBKjePezZBuMjjJTEM20ldOskrjQyRb-MvkgCX3xMz=s320" width="320" /></a></div><br />Linda Hickshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10622069411237073813noreply@blogger.com1Boston, MA, USA42.3600825 -71.0588801-17.21114700688986 148.3161199 90 69.5661199tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7829354056212202313.post-17157393758385226602021-11-23T17:58:00.008-08:002021-12-31T15:01:48.416-08:00Thankful for Thanksgiving 2021<p> Over the River (Charles) and through the towns, to grandchildren's home we go. The car knows the way, that I will say. Glad it's leaves, not snow all the way! The children's mother invited us to Thanksgiving and said I was not to bring anything. However, one has to have surprises for any event!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxCXGkEFMjcZQFROq-f31Y94xiIxPfbHrdu6-hZXkg02xkgmhfLCxiST4H67LknQHK_JqGw_Ut04pR-RQyPa7k9IxakpGAx9OPBq7hd8p-3vserJ3a1MMmKZvrZphzMZmx-PBW9o2pW0o/s1280/IMG_2147.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="1280" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxCXGkEFMjcZQFROq-f31Y94xiIxPfbHrdu6-hZXkg02xkgmhfLCxiST4H67LknQHK_JqGw_Ut04pR-RQyPa7k9IxakpGAx9OPBq7hd8p-3vserJ3a1MMmKZvrZphzMZmx-PBW9o2pW0o/w400-h300/IMG_2147.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /> First I think of novelty hats. The party store was out so I was glad to see some hats from 3 years ago Beth had saved and put out on her kitchen table. I was tempted by the big turkey balloon, but was glad they also were out! We write on paper leaves what we are grateful for. Then we glue them on a poster's tree created by a grandchild, or tape leaves on branches held by a vase or block of wood. We give to the children and the mother is stuck with what to do with them. She has carved a corner in the living room for these little paintings with some of the family creations, some photos and prints. I also found a print of a family artist, daughter-in-law's "Uncle Abe, "Abraham Walkowitz, who was in Alfred Stieglitz's 291 Gallery in NYC. Earlier I had found prints of his Isodora Duncan works at the MFA Boston. There paintings and photos in the shelves and walls in this corner off the living room warmed my heart when I discovered them. Next time I will edit the photos to lighter before posting. That was the best part for me in grammar school. Same today. I bought some white paint pens at Blick and some black paper to draw on. Whereas I loved etching with oil paint on canvas in the past, a la Gerry Bergstein, it is pen and paper today. So I handed a black tablet to 12-year-old grandson David, along with a white ink pen. He created this charming underwater piece. Note the surprises at the upper edge to down below. I framed it.<p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZWCZGAjhAq6nkpBDeVPe1MNLJ0luhmTuOgusuKkgttHtec9p7MIoSdjDLDunh1Kp9TWFoDaVYTJm8-3EJJQMensqpuWZ_U8cTZrORIFCD3vkNh9SWjTZ9F0BbHrlfm5IEa72jaje-KXg/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2379" data-original-width="3636" height="209" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZWCZGAjhAq6nkpBDeVPe1MNLJ0luhmTuOgusuKkgttHtec9p7MIoSdjDLDunh1Kp9TWFoDaVYTJm8-3EJJQMensqpuWZ_U8cTZrORIFCD3vkNh9SWjTZ9F0BbHrlfm5IEa72jaje-KXg/" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBw-6hYXL0X-0OOFg0HY0xIda_gz0dSbOeIS22P4T5bcReLfRWmt0rc6qR-rCliW2CHxyePWxrWVpXrO3h1GjkFswDlnnPCZ0-1sDAW04pHP77Jd5XUVBSoIdrk-x_d8oi5P73tRDgjDM/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div> The first of the year is too busy for me to accomplish anything, but these quick drawings are fun to sketch from the computer, newspaper or just out of one's head. I knocked off a few and then went back with a 30-second-dry black ink FUDE brush pen to hide what I didn't like. That was quite fun to learn what I like and don't like in this medium. Robins built two serious bird nests just outside our back door, a large one for 3 fat fledglings and a different nest nearby, too small for 4 robins born later. Of course I had to both watch/see and snap photos of the action. Although I painted the robins, the photos were better!<div><br /><div> The second robin family story is a sad one I am still trying to figure out. At first, this second nest was started in the upper half of the deck umbrella and that disappeared in the early stages. Not discouraged, the builder robin continued to create very near where the first nest had been, but not in the same spot and not so big. I worried it was half the size of the earlier one. But four eggs happened, because I saw 4 <u>NEST</u>lings. Later, I saw the first FLEDGling sitting below, trying to go further, prompted by mother robin's directions. She or he later worked hard to move the other two on as well . The mate had arrived days before and decisions were made. I am guessing that because one baby bird in the crowded nest must have died, possibly a broken neck, the others must be moved on for safety. After the nest was emptied and the family moved on, Joe cleaned out the area and we saw the dead nestling flat on the bottom of the nest. Very sad. I am certain that two of the fledglings did very well after their exit. I think I saw the two birds flying figure 8s near each other above our driveway. I hope a third who was the first out, did well also.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoMtVKp2fNFepvbfsDv0SQCeZW6PCx14jLTVLZoM7Mk35dfunFxay3v7nhxFVsDntsnKqPdWbZui3cVHlvZEfA0eMzHPNgC8mm8w0C4GpMjXxOKeZh7vQiuGNrNI17BGQV5TTTxde90_o/s4032/IMG_0553.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; Exploring.<p>Albert Einstein said, "Once you stop learning, you start dying." That seems a bit intense, but when brother Buddy asked me if I had worked with water mixable oils, I had to admit, of all the crafts I had not tried, that one was not tempting. He said it is such fun to work with oils but not have the smell and the cleanup. You just wash out your brush and containers with water! "Why not," said I!<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3yUfQLkR3KbAhvXRaNBflDtCcmSw3UNuUosjOf7LDdvSno6UqYzzG1jgnYNnYq9DwcTWMp13j2bm-dJYfaiPYw8z5azfrCzVxv89xzeX94d5wGQK-8-dVYyvsbSGddoh-ThBxKge3lec/s2048/350D7A61-CFF2-4480-9EBD-4D1F68DFA1DC_1_201_a.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1783" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3yUfQLkR3KbAhvXRaNBflDtCcmSw3UNuUosjOf7LDdvSno6UqYzzG1jgnYNnYq9DwcTWMp13j2bm-dJYfaiPYw8z5azfrCzVxv89xzeX94d5wGQK-8-dVYyvsbSGddoh-ThBxKge3lec/s320/350D7A61-CFF2-4480-9EBD-4D1F68DFA1DC_1_201_a.jpeg" width="320" /></a></p><p>Exploring online, I liked what I read about Cobra brand water mixable oils and bought a set of ten tubes. I was going to NYC to see Alice Neel before it closed at the Metropolitan Museum, Cezanne at MOMA and the Medici Portraits at the Met, so these paints would be easy to get into and carry on the spirit. At the art store I had earlier asked a helper what had most recently excited her that the store started carrying. She introduced me to Arches paper that is gessoed. Although she suggested the gessoed paper for studies, I like the fact that Cezanne often put several paintings on one big sheet or canvas and Tanquy his dealer could be seen cutting out the assorted gems to sell, three paintings from one. I loved the oil paints.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4KuR-5UnpOyYSm02cTx5qC9AUavPN2YDL92MjLSNzBjiPAfiTnEdKi-8ejR9_64z-1iH8BeiyKAqauDE64vVWve96vK13-vWq24l8U79eOQMzWZOGD_0XBCgk566l1hrLuiXqxgIuCfw/s2048/A1AE015D-5356-46FC-8CAF-BEF644E96897.heic" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4KuR-5UnpOyYSm02cTx5qC9AUavPN2YDL92MjLSNzBjiPAfiTnEdKi-8ejR9_64z-1iH8BeiyKAqauDE64vVWve96vK13-vWq24l8U79eOQMzWZOGD_0XBCgk566l1hrLuiXqxgIuCfw/s320/A1AE015D-5356-46FC-8CAF-BEF644E96897.heic" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;">I had read in the Times and seen photos of Cezanne's drawings and watercolors or colored pencils and thought I must be prepared for that as well. I went armed with a good 0.7 mechanical pencil with leads that were darker than usual. I loved working in a Cezanne spirit, but of course forgot the colored pencils. I picked up a limited number at the Met. It was 95 degrees in NYC but it seemed open and beautiful again, while nightly I would color: paint and draw. When I returned home I couldn't quit. Cezanne said he sketched daily; and the late in day drawing prepared him for painting the next day.</span></div></div><p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSbZqgCrwNRqsi8InCQ24H45M11a4DmHuJfwaJgxenEp6dee0_TAgmjUUFAYecFT7q9vYgvrF7bDqGXdiJP9cOcw7NEYDnuWYYhkuYHSwbN4yKUxZnscyZsh88DeyIppHYac0Fu8RfPEw/s2048/232AFFA9-CE0E-485C-9102-FEFF49D779CA.heic" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSbZqgCrwNRqsi8InCQ24H45M11a4DmHuJfwaJgxenEp6dee0_TAgmjUUFAYecFT7q9vYgvrF7bDqGXdiJP9cOcw7NEYDnuWYYhkuYHSwbN4yKUxZnscyZsh88DeyIppHYac0Fu8RfPEw/s320/232AFFA9-CE0E-485C-9102-FEFF49D779CA.heic" /></a></p><p>The oil painting did not dry immediately like my gouache paintings did, so I ordered Daniel Smith water mixable medium that speeds up the drying. However. the water mixable oil paint lifts so beautifully and covers so well when wet, I was excited to keep working on the self portrait. I was so mesmerized drawing sunflowers one early morn in the dark with my new mechanical pencil and dark lead, I dated the drawing 2020 instead of 2021. </p><p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfaBeZq3az3l1hY8ELEbEzN_54xv88MsrgT5mWqaQoJDuT_fESQ1K8l-RU8aQ3q0Y6L9LNZlpGCGHas5kxoUt98qPE-AXXCS_1iKbkUkeYxSUqGyK-8ireQfQGoIMn_93q_SAbSD2rNJc/s2048/D732FB0A-4CCE-4EEE-810C-C6CA63F1F819.heic" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfaBeZq3az3l1hY8ELEbEzN_54xv88MsrgT5mWqaQoJDuT_fESQ1K8l-RU8aQ3q0Y6L9LNZlpGCGHas5kxoUt98qPE-AXXCS_1iKbkUkeYxSUqGyK-8ireQfQGoIMn_93q_SAbSD2rNJc/s320/D732FB0A-4CCE-4EEE-810C-C6CA63F1F819.heic" /></a></p><p></p><p>And I haven't even told you about the superior drawing lessons online: Art Making at the Princeton Museum which reference their collections and take you on more trips of the mind and hand.Nor did we discuss synthetic squirrel watercolor brushes. The robins and I have been creating. I found a delightful video put out by Amanda Hilburn: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efInQUWDYsw">Painting a Nest With A Palette Knife - YouTube</a> about </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">how to paint four nests at a time using palette knives. In the past I have only used palette knives to mix paint, so this was an adventure. I had so much fun, I painted four more and plan to paint more to drop off at friends.'</span></span><div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span><div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbCsb3FlHGpmIHKxMWEZck_PYcrxlgrN4sUQRmXs5wmDLBETZcRaSnj5tJGjvAHs6dhYSuBBSAqxacv_egd5fhLIkBML-EWrHunWbOE1LtpulhU6ndytPydMFayyJq-4I39rwvNlPirdg/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><img data-original-height="1074" data-original-width="2048" height="210" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbCsb3FlHGpmIHKxMWEZck_PYcrxlgrN4sUQRmXs5wmDLBETZcRaSnj5tJGjvAHs6dhYSuBBSAqxacv_egd5fhLIkBML-EWrHunWbOE1LtpulhU6ndytPydMFayyJq-4I39rwvNlPirdg/w400-h210/68BACD54-41A2-418D-A2DD-4621239B4E1B_1_201_a.jpeg" width="400" /></span></a></div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;"> At the same time, a mother robin was building nests in several spots under the deck roof, just outside our back door. I became obsessed with photographing the building of the nest with dry grass and mud, watching the mother shape the cup of the nest where she would deliver. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">How we have thrilled daily as the birds appeared, grew and are about to fly. A wonderful video can be watched at <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gklvwoc2qus">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gklvwoc2qus</a> made by a young father and his daughter. Below are my photos of our robins. Unfortunately, they fledged today before breakfast and we missed their first steps out.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;"> I had some very small canvases; and I put the nests in different spots on each. I used a small piece of cardboard to squeeze out my colors. I used a two-inch palette knife with a point to lay out black for the center, brown loosely around the edges, and then added a yellow gold and white, one atop the other. A little gold or white strips around the black gave depth. I went back to lay in the background and sides with titanium white, mixed a little here and there with bits of black or brown, but mostly white. I cheated a bit with a tiny brush and I touched up some of the straw. I used turquoise for the eggs, mixed with white and touched up with a little background color. I rounded off the eggs by darkening the edges. May Day beckons one to create festive baskets for neighbors' doors. There are numerous videos and instructions to make cone baskets with ribbons, filling them with flowers, and secretly leaving on a door handle! Next year for certain! Google May Day baskets and join me next year.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"> Today I want to share the birthday card part of celebrations. Every time the grandchildren had a birthday I made a card to go with their gift. At first the cards were mini journal quilts and with age have become mini posters.
